Last Days

Today is my last day at Cypress.

Let me explain. No, there is no time, let me sum up.

While I was at BSU I was an intern at Micron Technology here in Boise. I fully expected to get a job there, as most interns do (unless they totally screw something up). Then the hiring freeze came. Nobody got hired after that, so I went job searching. I ended up taking a job with Cypress Semiconductor here in Boise doing embedded firmware development for Cypress development kits, reference designs, etc. I wasn't sure I'd like it.

It's been the best 2 years in my professional/educational life.

The people I work with are phenominal. I can't stress that enough. The company has its ups and downs, but this office has a feel all its own. This has become a home of sorts for me, and the people here an extended family.

In Feb. we found out that Cypress had decided to close its Boise office, for "consolidation" purposes. Some people got offers to move to the Seattle area to one of the larger Cypress offices, and most of us just got laid off. There's a lot of politics, outsorcing, and BS that goes along with the decision, but it is what it is. Some people were being let go after 60 days, some after 120 days, and some after 180 days. I was in the 120 day group. Those staying longer than 60 days were expected to put in work as normal.

I was lucky enough to find a new job quickly. I'm starting back at Micron on Monday, in their SSD (Solid State Drive) group doing product engineering. It's kind of fun because it's right back where Imaging was, and there are a couple of people who will be going there from Cypress, too.

Anyway, it's kind of a bittersweet time for me. It reminds me very much of high school graduation. On the one hand, I'm very happy to be leaving all the BS behind. Every company has problems, but it seems like Cypress has more than its share. So part of my is saying "Forget this place, I'm so glad to be getting out of here, I'm never coming back!" And on the other hand, I know there are a lot of people who I won't see anymore, much less have the opportunity to work with them. Along with the problems that we've had comes a serious "foxhole mentality" that has caused us to become very close. I'll miss that esprit de corps especially.

It's been a good run. I'll miss you guys.

Plus I just got Windows 7 installed on my laptop and now I have to leave it here. :-(
